Nonresidential building starts declined by 5.4%, residential starts improved 2.4%, and nonbuilding starts grew 9.3% over the month. On a year-to-date basis through August, total construction starts were up 1.9% from last year. On a year-to-date basis through August, nonbuilding starts were up 8.1%, alongside gains in highways and bridges (+7.8% m\/m), miscellaneous nonbuilding (+22.6% m\/m), and utilities (+12.6% m\/m).
