Previously deemed nonessential commercial activity, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer suspended real estate and nonessential construction March 23 due to the coronavirus outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll now reemerge with new safety rules and guidelines in place.<\/p>\n<p>As of February, Michigan had 182,000 workers in the construction industry, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/milmi.org\/datasearch\/industry-employment-by-sector\">Michigan Industry Employment report<\/a>. There are 42,419 real estate agents, 9,942 associate brokers, 11,348 brokers and 716 branch real estate offices in the state, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/som\/404\">Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re happy,\u201d said Maureen Francis, president of Michigan Realtors and an associate broker with Coldwell Banker Weir Manuel in Birmingham. \u201cMichigan and Pennsylvania has the most restrictive executive orders in the country. Other states, realtors were deemed essential; they were not in Michigan, so we were not allowed to leave our houses to do anything &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That\u2019s pretty limiting when you typically meet with the public to show houses or whatnot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the eve of the real estate market\u2019s reopening, Francis said she\u2019s \u201cbooked,&#8221; and expects other agents and brokers are negotiating equally busy itineraries as the market comes back to life.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/mirealtors\/?__tn__=kC-R&amp;eid=ARBn9EFBtfkiAJJeyRrFUccP92uwyQbjZp2S5CQoYd6o8u2cd5140YItzfcfZQ8oKCqAu65NhbZOVnX3&amp;hc_ref=ARR-kox22_8h8xC3vdZiNma26eWoXqOfehFmvJhEudO5dra5nkiIoYgaTQkJJ2-4PiE&amp;fref=nf&amp;__xts__[0]=68.ARDqzuugFjacW520worMWPW4wjh7tpnxvQ1xW8HL4yPYtC-2SDSKh1zomXjXs6Ge47pd8hC4xqW81ri0OnE6IMR6QybnZtTdAodh5BxhGtqcjpRjUMFc3QcQyTA5ZJLdNE0yyKtYTITYBnHKXFWMxSil5b0WZCE3WE76tGxEypq0r1h9JasHSJy59ZY7WFI6va27o1R_HHbob-Kit3DcFMKZWxwfLTGwE5UjHjpAb-kScgRdXCs55s5rR3JFUezvFkLLODLcQxoKWbFOB0DksRW1OioKtFzfBOAMLso1vzvfn7NLobqrgjakXbRUc2Za6EXmK0iQG_18tw\">Michigan Realtors<\/a>, which represents nearly 34,000 real estate professionals, submitted a list of proposed safety guidelines to the governor before she announced she would allow the industry to reopen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe kind of took the best of everybody\u2019s (guidelines from other states) and made those as a proposal to the governor,\u201d Francis said. &#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Many of those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirealtors.com\/Portals\/0\/Documents\/toolkit20.pdf\">guidelines are now in place<\/a> industry-wide. Similarly, the state Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity on Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/som\/404\">released guidelines<\/a> for construction companies to follow.<\/p>\n<p>While both industries resurface, it won\u2019t be business as usual.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Among the new real estate guidelines are the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No \u201copen houses.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The maximum number of people allowed at a property simultaneously is four.<\/p>\n<p>No showing rental properties until the tenants have vacated.<\/p>\n<p>Maintain 6-foot social distancing recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>Sellers are asked to disinfect surfaces, open doors and cupboards, and leave lights on in preparation for a showing.<\/p>\n<p>Buyers are discouraged from touching surfaces during showings.<\/p>\n<p>Agents and clients are urged to arrive at showings separately.<\/p>\n<p>Post-showing discussions should take place over the phone or by email.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New construction guidelines:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Workers and patrons must be at least six feet from one another at a job site, to the maximum extent possible.<\/p>\n<p>Designated site supervisors should enforce COVID-19 controls.<\/p>\n<p>Hand-washing or hand-sanitizing stations should be provided at work sites.<\/p>\n<p>Entry points or other indicators should be established, if possible, to assure all workers are health-screened every day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/som\/404\">Full guidelines for construction companies can be viewed here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Francis said she expects the market to rebound.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a shortage of supply going into this &#8230; and that\u2019s why prices had steadily risen,\u201d she said. &#8220;There were bidding wars and things like that in many segments of the market prior to COVID-19. Interest rates are at a historic low.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe still saw demand going on during the shutdown. Especially coming out of this, we\u2019re expecting that things will be quite brisk. It\u2019s nothing like the financial crisis and last recession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>COVID-19 PREVENTION TIPS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/antibacterial-soap\/s?k=antibacterial+soap\">washing hands regularly and not touching your face<\/a>, officials recommend practicing social distancing, assuming anyone may be carrying the virus.<\/p>\n<p>Health officials say you should be staying at least 6 feet away from others and working from home, if possible.<\/p>\n<p>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/b?ie=UTF8&#038;node=15524338011\">disinfecting wipes<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Best-Sellers-Health-Personal-Care-All-Purpose-Household-Cleaners\/zgbs\/hpc\/15356141\">disinfecting spray cleaners on frequently-touched surfaces<\/a> in your home (door handles, faucets, countertops) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/hand-sanitizer\/s?k=hand+sanitizer&#038;imprToken=10c21bf3-dc37-9794-eb9&#038;linkCode=w50&#038;ots=1&#038;slotNum=0&#038;tag=advancemichig-20\">carry hand sanitizer with you<\/a> when you go into places like stores.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan Gov.
