{"id":2433,"date":"2020-04-15T09:12:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-15T13:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.construction.com\/newsroom_details_pag\/enr-survey-40-of-firms-have-laid-off-workers\/"},"modified":"2025-10-11T09:49:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-11T13:49:10","slug":"enr-survey-40-of-firms-have-laid-off-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.construction.com\/reports\/enr-survey-40-of-firms-have-laid-off-workers\/","title":{"rendered":"ENR Survey\/40% of firms have laid off workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Nearly 40% of Firms Have Laid Off Workers, New AGC Survey Says<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"height: 588px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.construction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/COVID_Stock_Art.jpg\" alt=\"Abstract image representing the COVID-19 pandemic's impact, often used in articles about economic or industry disruptions.\" \/><br \/>\nMore than one out of three (36%) firms surveyed said they had had furloughed or terminated jobsite workers, while 18% had laid off office or other workers.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 40% of U.S. firms have been forced to lay off employees because of project cancellations and shortages of equipment or materials caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to an online survey released April 10 by the Associated General Contractors of America.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOwners are not only halting many current construction projects but are canceling a growing number of projects that have not yet started,\u201d said Ken Simonson, AGC chief economist. \u201cInevitably, that has caused a growing number of contractors to furlough or terminate jobsite workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.enr.com\/articles\/48879-latest-updates-on-the-coronavirus-pandemic\">[For ENR\u2019s latest coverage of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, click here]<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Simonson said that 53% of firms report being directed to cancel current projects or ones scheduled to start within the next 30 days. The survey, conducted from April 6 \u2013 9, also said that 74% of firms are seeking help from the new federal Paycheck Protection Program loans.<\/p>\n<p>The latest survey revealed a steep increase in the share of firms reporting that an owner had canceled an upcoming project\u2014up to 19% from 7% the week before. In a question asked for the first time, 11% of the survey\u2019s 830 respondents reported that an owner had canceled a project while it was still in preconstruction.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enr.com\/articles\/48976-agc-survey-28-percent-of-members-report-halted-or-delayed-projects-due-to-covid-19\">previous survey<\/a> conducted by the association between March 17 and 19, revealed that only 28% of the 909 respondents said they had an owner, government agency or official tell them to halt or delay work on active projects or on jobs expected to start within a month.<\/p>\n<p>AGC also reported that 39% of respondents in the latest survey said they had encountered project delays or disruptions due to shortages of personal protective equipment such as masks for jobsite workers, while 23% reported shortages of construction materials, equipment or parts.<\/p>\n<p>In AGC\u2019s previous survey, which had combined those questions, only about one-third (35%) of firms reported equipment shortages.<\/p>\n<p>The share of firms that reported furloughs or terminations rose to 40% from 31% a week earlier.
