{"id":2208,"date":"2020-03-27T09:29:43","date_gmt":"2020-03-27T13:29:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.construction.com\/newsroom_details_pag\/atlanta-work-continues-and-a-reminder-as-to-why-proper-grammar-is-important\/"},"modified":"2025-10-14T04:22:47","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T08:22:47","slug":"atlanta-work-continues-and-a-reminder-as-to-why-proper-grammar-is-important","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.construction.com\/reports\/atlanta-work-continues-and-a-reminder-as-to-why-proper-grammar-is-important\/","title":{"rendered":"Atlanta work continues (and a reminder as to why proper grammar is important)."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Atlanta\u2019s development boom cleared to continue during coronavirus pandemic<\/strong><br \/>\nA comma error almost signaled a snag in the city\u2019s growth spurt, it seems<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.construction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/JTP_5407.0.0.webp\" alt=\"Commercial building with modern facade and large glass windows, showcasing new construction.\" \/><br \/>\nA familiar Midtown scene in recent years. <\/p>\n<p>As elected officials across the globe wrangle with how to regulate day-to-day life in an effort to curb the fast-spreading novel coronavirus, some industries have been nearly forced to a standstill.<\/p>\n<p>In many cities, schools have closed or been shifted entirely online; the entertainment industry\u2014namely movie theaters and concert halls\u2014has been crippled; and bars and restaurants have either shuttered or been relegated to takeout and delivery-only operations.<\/p>\n<p>So when Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms enacted a <a href=\"https:\/\/atlanta.curbed.com\/2020\/3\/24\/21191649\/coronavirus-atlanta-stay-home-covid-19-mayor-keisha-lance-bottoms\">14-day \u201cstay at home\u201d order<\/a> on Monday, it placed a huge question mark behind the immediate future of Atlanta\u2019s years-long development boom.<\/p>\n<p>The executive order called on Atlantans to shelter at their homes, except in cases in which they need to carry out \u201cessential activities,\u201d such as grocery shopping, exercising\u2014but not at gyms\u2014and maintaining public infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The official language (initially) said, \u201cindividuals may leave their residence to provide any services or perform any work necessary to the operations and maintenance of \u2018Essential Infrastructure,\u2019 including, but not limited to public works construction, airport operations, utility, water, sewer, gas, electrical, oil refining, roads and highways, railroads, public transportation&#8230;\u201d and so forth.<\/p>\n<p>It seemed as if construction sites for private developments had been deemed off-limits. The reality, however, is that <a href=\"https:\/\/agc-georgia.informz.net\/informzdataservice\/onlineversion\/ind\/bWFpbGluZ2luc3RhbmNlaWQ9OTIyMTQzOCZzdWJzY3JpYmVyaWQ9MTA5MzAwNzMzNQ==\">a comma error<\/a> had some observers\u2014including Associated General Contractors of Georgia officials\u2014wondering if the coronavirus had thrown a wrench in Atlanta\u2019s growth spurt.<\/p>\n<p>As the <a href=\"https:\/\/agc-georgia.informz.net\/informzdataservice\/onlineversion\/ind\/bWFpbGluZ2luc3RhbmNlaWQ9OTIyMTQzOCZzdWJzY3JpYmVyaWQ9MTA5MzAwNzMzNQ==\">AGC<\/a> pointed out, city officials revised the mayor\u2019s executive order to include \u201can important comma\u201d between \u201cpublic works\u201d and \u201cconstruction,\u201d thereby giving developers the green light to keep construction projects moving.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.construction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image002__005_.webp\" alt=\"Construction site with a concrete mixer truck pouring concrete, illustrating concrete work.\" \/><br \/>\nAn image attached to an AGC blog post entitled \u201cThe Power of a Comma.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, after Curbed Atlanta inquired about how the first draft of the order published appeared to exclude construction under the \u201cessential business\u201d umbrella, Atlanta\u2019s Department of City Planning commissioner Tim Keane clarified in an email blast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the City of Atlanta, construction is one of the essential businesses exempt from the Mayor\u2019s \u2018Stay at Home\u2019 Executive Order of March 23, 2020,\u201d he wrote. \u201cTherefore, construction within the corporate city limits may continue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, permitting and inspections have been delayed at the planning department, as Atlanta City Hall has been closed to the public and officials strive to practice social distancing.<\/p>\n<p>Keane also noted the city is now accepting private, third-party inspections of projects, as long as they\u2019re reviewed and cleared by city officials.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.construction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/MidtownUnion.webp\" alt=\"Rendering or photo of Midtown Union, a mixed-use development, highlighting urban construction.\" \/><br \/>\nThe Midtown Union site Tuesday at 17th and Spring streets. <\/p>\n<p>Construction itself isn\u2019t always conducive to social distancing, as Mike Durham, CEO of the AGC of Georgia stressed in an interview last week. He spelled out what crews might be facing:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re out in the middle of a field pouring a new slab for a warehouse, that kind of work can continue to move forward, as long as your permitting and inspections are done properly&#8230; Some tasks lend themselves to keeping that distance, but it\u2019s a trade-dependent job. You can set tile, and the next tile-setter could be six feet away. But if you\u2019re both working to put in a door, and you need someone to help you hold it as you send it in, you\u2019re going to be a lot closer than six feet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s too soon to say what other curveballs the pandemic could throw at the city\u2019s construction industry.
