{"id":1824,"date":"2020-03-20T13:35:14","date_gmt":"2020-03-20T17:35:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.construction.com\/newsroom_details_pag\/coronavirus-wont-delay-bostons-tallest-new-building\/"},"modified":"2026-01-28T17:08:29","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T22:08:29","slug":"coronavirus-wont-delay-bostons-tallest-new-building","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.construction.com\/reports\/coronavirus-wont-delay-bostons-tallest-new-building\/","title":{"rendered":"Coronavirus won\u2019t delay Boston\u2019s tallest new building"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Coronavirus won\u2019t delay Boston\u2019s tallest new building, developer says<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nThe 691-foot Winthrop Center\u2014the tallest U.S. building under construction north of New York City, in fact\u2014is still on pace to open in 2022<\/p>\n<p>(Winthrop Center under construction in mid-March, just as Boston\u2019s building moratorium went into effect.)<\/p>\n<p>The developer behind <a href=\"https:\/\/boston.curbed.com\/maps\/boston-tallest-buildings-towers\">the tallest U.S. building under construction north of New York City<\/a> is vowing to pivot strongly out of Boston\u2019s construction moratorium.<\/p>\n<p>The city on March 17 <a href=\"https:\/\/boston.curbed.com\/boston-development\/2020\/3\/19\/21186464\/cambridge-construction-coronavirus\">instituted a ban on most construction activity for at least two weeks<\/a> in an effort to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus. Boston was the first U.S. city to do so.<\/p>\n<p>MP Boston, an affiliate of Millennium Partners, issued a statement on March 18 saying that its development of the 691-foot Winthrop Center skyscraper at 115 Winthrop Square in the Financial District would continue after the ban\u2014and, in some ways, was continuing right through it. The tower has been under construction since 2018. Per Kathleen MacNeil, a principal at MP Boston who oversees the firm\u2019s construction:<\/p>\n<p><em>Our main concern is the health and wellbeing of our construction teams. We are monitoring the situation very closely and following the direction given by the local, state and federal government and will be taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of our workers. As developers in this great city for the past two decades, we are accustomed to overcoming great challenges. Meanwhile, our team will continue to work on all the project details, including shop drawings, fabrication plans, and logistics. As soon as we are given clearance, we will immediately resume the construction of Winthrop Center with speed and efficiency.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The composition of Winthrop Center is still evolving. <a href=\"https:\/\/boston.curbed.com\/boston-development\/2019\/10\/29\/20938652\/winthrop-center-plans-change\">At last count<\/a>, it was due to encompass more than 1.54 million square feet and include some 387 condos, plus more than 772,000 gross square feet of office space.
